However, it is understood Chelsea made clear to Gallagher that he is not expected to be a regular first-team starter in the coming seasons under new manager Enzo Maresca, with his possession-based style of football.

As a result, Gallagher was banished from the first-team with the club unwilling to allow him to leave on a free transfer next year.

Howe hints at transfer breakthroughNewcastle United ended their pre-season tour of Japan with a 2-0 defeat to Yokihama F Marinos, and immediately after the game, Eddie Howe was asked about transfers.

The Magpies have agreed a deal with Sheffield United for young striker William Osula.

The Toon are set to pay a total package of £15 million to the Blades.

Meanwhile, the talkSPORT understands the Magpies have also opened talks with Crystal Palace over Marc Guehi.

Howe was asked about both players and refused to comment, but he hinted a breakthrough was close.

He said: “Our efforts in the transfer market are ongoing.

“I’m out of touch with all of those movements but I know we are trying.

“Hopefully, we can bring you news soon. I’m not going to talk individually on deals.”

Arteta to raid City againArsenal have expressed an interest in signing Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez this summer, talkSPORT understands.

Couto, who spent last season on loan at Girona, has made the move to Germany on a loan with an option to buy for around £23million.

Speaking after his move was announced, the Brazilian said: “For me, it’s a dream come true. Borussia Dortmund is a special club.

“Every child in Brazil knows how great this club is, knows the fans, and is fascinated by the Yellow Wall.

“So, it’s a great opportunity if it comes around. I don’t think it will get to the fee that had been talked about.

“Man United have pulled out. Liverpool seem to have lost interest as it’s not as big of a need with Quansah coming through.

“So it would be a great opportunity for him.

“Crystal Palace fans must be pulling their hair out because the moment get a side with lots of exciting players, you see them go.”

Credit: GettyClasslessEx-Arsenal winger Perry Groves has criticised Chelsea over their treatment of Conor Gallagher this summer.

The midfielder has been told he is no longer part of the first-team group amid a dispute over his future, talkSPORT understands.

Chelsea have accepted a £34million bid from Atletico Madrid after Gallagher rejected two recent contract extensions.

However, the 24-year-old, whose current deal runs out in 2025, will only leave on his own terms and refuses to be forced out after 16 years at the club.

Gallagher believes he deserves a longer contract but the Blues do not expect him to be a starter over the coming years.

Fans have been left fuming by Chelsea’s treatment of an academy graduate who was among their most important players last season and often deputised as captain in Reece James’ absence.

Groves told talkSPORT: “The way they’ve handled this situation shows a complete lack of class, a complete lack of respect. We know football is brutal, right? It is brutal. Basically, you’re a commodity.

“Now to say to somebody, right, you’re not training with the first team, a club captain by the way, who had a really good season last season, they’re saying that they don’t think that he can play the way that Enzo Maresca wants him to play.

“Now, has Enzo Maresca actually said that? This goes to Paul Winstanley and Lawrence Stewart, who are the directors of football.

“They are the directors of mayhem at the moment, aren’t they? Because they don’t know what they’re doing.”

Guehi alternative talkSPORT understands Newcastle could reignite their interest in Liverpool defender Joe Gomez if they fail to sign Marc Guehi.

The Magpies were in talks with the Reds over a move for Gomez earlier this summer – with Anthony Gordon set to head in the opposite direction.

Talks broke down but it is understood Newcastle retain an interest in Gomez, whose Liverpool future remains in doubt this summer.

The player, who is in the final year of his Blues contract and has rejected two new offers, is determined to leave Stamford Bridge on his own terms.

Now, talkSPORT understands the Blues have told the 24-year-old he will not be training with the first-team when they return from their tour of the United States.

They will hold further talks with Gallagher on Friday as they look to resolve his future, with their latest contract offer still on the table.

Gallagher was spotted at Cobham on Friday and is yet to enter talks with Atletico Madrid, who want an answer from Gallagher by the end of the weekend.

But Maresca kept his cards close to his chest when asked about the situation.

Maresca said in a press conference: “The only thing I can say is he is in contact with the club to find a solution. The club offered him a new contract. I am focused on here.”

He added: “I would keep all the players if I could, and any player in the squad I’ll do my best to use them. The club are talking about a solution and I am working on the game with Manchester City.”

At around £25million he will become the fourth signing of the summer for the Hammers under new boss Julen Lopetegui.

Summerville scored 21 goals in all competitions for Leeds last season and was third-highest scorer in the Championship with 19.

He joined Leeds from Feyenoord in September 2020 and has scored 25 goals in 89 appearances in total.

West Ham have signed Max Kilman from Wolves, Luis Guilherme from Palmeiras and Wes Foderingham from Sheffield United since finishing ninth in the top flight last season under former boss David Moyes.
