Tributes flood in after Germany legend Brehme dies aged 63
German football legend Andreas Brehme, scorer of the winning goal in the 1990 World Cup final, has died aged 63.
Brehme was a mainstay of the West Germany and Germany sides of the 1980s and 1990s and converted the late match-winning penalty against Argentina in Rome to clinch the World Cup 34 years ago.
Tributes have been paid to the former defender by his old clubs, and Inter announced that their players will wear black armbands in their UEFA Champions League game against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday in Brehme’s honour.
Bayern, where Brehme spent two seasons from 1986 to 1988 and won a Bundesliga title, wrote: “FC Bayern are extremely saddened by the sudden passing of Andreas Brehme. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
“Andreas Brehme will forever be in our hearts, as a World Cup winner and, more importantly, as a very special person. He will forever be part of the FC Bayern family. Rest in peace, Andi!”
After leaving Munich, Brehme spent four seasons in Italy with Inter, winning Serie A and UEFA Cup trophies with the Milanese giants.
“FC Internazionale Milano and the entire Inter family are deeply saddened by the passing of Andreas Brehme and send their deepest condolences to his family,” said Inter.
“The German great played for Inter from 1988 to 1992, making 154 appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals and winning one scudetto, one UEFA Cup and one Supercoppa Italiana.
“In his honour, the Nerazzurri will wear a black armband during tonight’s game against Atletico Madrid.”
Kaiserslautern, where Brehme won back-to-back second tier and Bundesliga titles in the 1990s and where he spent two separate five-year spells either end of his career, also paid tribute.
“FCK mourns the passing of Andreas Brehme. He wore the Red Devils’ shirt for a total of 10 years and became German champion and German Cup winner with FCK,” said the club.
“In 1990, he fired the German national team to the World Cup title with his penalty and became a football legend. The FCK family is in deep mourning and our thoughts are with Andi’s family and friends.”
Brehme won 86 caps for West Germany and Germany, helping them reach the 1986 World Cup final and ultimately avenge the defeat to Argentina in that game four years later.
