USA vs. Canada live score: USMNT and CanMNT result, updates, stats from CONCACAF Nations League third place

Anytime the USMNT faces off against Canada nowadays, there’s a heated undertone to the clash, but this game will have an air of disappointment as the two teams meet in the third place match of the 2024/25 CONCACAF Nations League.

Both sides were left bitterly disappointed not to reach the final, especially the United States who were stunned by Panama 1-0 in the semifinals on a stoppage-time winner.

The defeat was an embarrassment for Mauricio Pochettino who suffered his first truly negative result as USMNT head coach. The former PSG and Chelsea manager was quite simply out-coached by Thomas Christensen, making a host of errors that drew criticism from fans and media and shattered the previously impervious aura around his hire.

It left the United States, who had won all previous iterations of the Nations League, not in the final for the first time in the competition’s four tournaments.

Canada, meanwhile, were up to the task against Mexico but failed to take advantage of their spells of superiority before being punished for defensive errors.

USA vs. Canada live updates, highlights from Nations LeagueHALFTIME: USA 1-1 Canada

Canada had the better run of play in that first half, but it’s even on the scoreline as Patrick Agyemang cashed in on what was really the only positive move forward for the hosts.

After conceding to Tani Oluwaseyi, the U.S. gained a better foothold in the game, but they still saw themselves overwhelmed for long spells of possession. There’s a lot to improve on for Mauricio Pochettino, but Jesse Marsch will also be frustrated with how they conceded.

A sloppy first 45 minutes for both sides in truth. Fitting of a third place match.

43rd min: Moise Bombito has to absorb a yellow card to prevent Christian Pulisic from getting off on the counter. He gets cooked by a check-back and he has to grab the Milan man on the collar of his shirt.

35th min: GOAL! USA! Patrick Agyemang has the ball in the back of the net on a chance created by Diego Luna and Tim Weah, and we’re level!

The U.S. finally get a foothold in the game as Tim Weah cuts inside from the left and feeds an exceptional ball forward to Luna inside the top of the penalty area. Luna slams on the brakes to let his defender fly by and then taps it to Agyemang to his right, and the Charlotte FC man fires the ball into the back of the net deflected off a sliding defender!

30th min: Joe Scally picks up the first yellow card of the game as he clips the ankle of a Canada player out wide looking to hack at a bouncing ball.

27th min: GOAL! CANADA! It was coming, as Tani Oluwaseyi gets his first international goal!

The United States has been under a Canada onslaught the first 25 minutes, and finally the pressure pays off as an entry feed from the left finds a Canada player for the shot. His effort is deflected into the path of Oluwaseyi who collects and pokes it past Matt Turner from about three yards out!

There was a long review for offside, but the goal stands!

26th min: The U.S. are completely on the back foot right now as Canada apply repeated pressure in the USMNT defensive third. This is an onslaught right now as the U.S. cannot get out of their own half.

22nd min: Chance, Canada! Les Rouges create something off a long throw as Ismael Kone gets a free volley, but it’s blocked. The deflection nearly falls for an attacker right on the doorstep but Matt Turner recovers exceptionally to flip the ball out of danger right before the header is connected!

10th min: Alistair Johnston is extremely lucky not to be yellow carded as he bulldozes Patrick Agyemang in midfield. Canada’s possession is cleared and the ball comes down and bounces right in front of Agyemang, who leaps to head it forward for himself. Johnston doesn’t go for the ball, but instead goes for the man and pummels the USMNT forward.

While Agyemang receives treatment, it appears Alphonso Davies cannot continue, as Niko Sigur comes on to replace the Bayern Munich man. Sigur goes to right-back which moves Johnston over to left-back.

9th min: Canada have a good opportunity as Tajon Buchanan gets free down the left edge of the penalty area and cuts inside, but his cutback to the penalty spot is cut out by Max Arfston who comes sliding in through to cut the ball out before it reached Jonathan David.

8th min: Alphonso Davies needs a bit of treatment, having dealt with a hamstring issue recently but managing to shake it off at least for now after testing it out on the touchline.

2nd min: The U.S. get the first real dangerous attacking move thanks to a very fortunate bounce down the right which frees Tim Weah, but they waste the opportunity as Weah’s cutback for Patrick Agyemang is double-doinked off Weah himself and out for a goal kick.

Kickoff: They’re under way at SoFi Stadium! Both sides are hoping to exorcise demons from a few days ago, while one side could leave with a bitter taste in their mouths from this international break on the whole.

Once again, the attendance is miserable in Los Angeles.

— Paul Carr (@PaulCarr) March 23, 2025USA vs. Canada: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more15 mins to kick: Today’s refereeing trio will be an all-female crew led by Mexican official Katia Garcia.

Garcia was the first female referee to officiate a men’s La Liga match in over 20 years when she took charge of Pachuca and Queretaro in March of 2024. She has also officiated a match between these two nations before, refereeing a USWNT vs. Canada women’s match at the 2020 SheBelieves Cup.

— Christina Unkel (@ChristinaUnkel) March 23, 202530 mins to kick: Some USMNT followers speculated that Zack Steffen could get a shot in goal tonight, but U.S. Soccer announced that he and Brian Gutierrez have not been included in the matchday squad due to injuries.

Brian Gutiérrez (muscular discomfort) and Zack Steffen (illness) were not included on the match day roster.

— U.S. Soccer Men’s National Team (@USMNT) March 23, 202545 mins to kickoff: Canada have gone with largely the same lineup that began the defeat to Mexico, with a few changes. The most notable move made by Jesse Marsch is to give Stephen Eusatquio some rest in midfield, with Mathieu Choiniere entering in his place.

Also brought in is Tani Oluwaseyi who comes into the attack for Cyle Larin, up front alongside regulars Jonathan David and Tajon Buchanan.

1 hour to kickoff: The USMNT lineup is out, and Mauricio Pochettino has made a number of changes from the Panama defeat. Most notably, Patrick Agyemang gets the start at striker as Josh Sargent is sat. That’s an interesting decision as Sargent looked dangerous against Panama and maybe deserved another chance to break his long goalless streak.

Pochettino has rotated both center-backs as Cameron Carter-Vickers and Mark McKenzie come in for Tim Ream and Chris Richards. Max Arfsten starts at full-back, while Diego Luna is deployed in midfield over Gio Reyna.

— Concacaf Nations League (@CNationsLeague) March 23, 20251 hour 15 mins to kick: Tim Weah is eyeing how the USMNT will pick themselves from defeat on Thursday. While fans and media can continue to dissect what went wrong and how it matters moving forward, the players and coaches must refocus on this match today.

“Obviously things happen, and it’s about how you bounce back,” Weah said. “The bigger picture is what we’re looking at.”

There’s no question that the players have little else but to move on, but in the World Cup there are no second chances. Things can’t just “happen.” Hopefully Pochettino is instilling that mentality within the players.

— U.S. Soccer Men’s National Team (@USMNT) March 23, 20251 hour 30 mins to kick: While Gio Reyna is on hand for the USMNT this national break, it was surprising to see him not selected to enter against Panama needing a goal down the stretch. Instead, Jack McGlynn was chosen to come on and help the U.S. progress the ball.

Mauricio Pochettino said that Reyna’s lack of club minutes leaves him performing at a level that’s “maybe not his best.” But Poch did indicate they hope to have him involved in today’s match. We’ll see if that’s from the start or off the bench.

— FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) March 22, 20251 hour 45 mins to kick: Canada head coach knows that while they have core values and structures they value most, they are also adaptive to be able to adjust from opponent to opponent.

The #CanMNT 🇨🇦 know there will be plenty of eager eyes watching them take on the #USMNT 🇺🇸 today, back home in Canada 👀

But, as Jesse Marsch puts it: “With success comes expectations. We’re not afraid of that.”

— OneSoccer (@onesoccer) March 23, 20252 hours to kickoff: Regardless of the disappointment for the competitive stage of this match, neither team is likely to take this game off. Canada feel as though they are lacking “respect” from the game, especially in the aftermath of the semifinal defeat where they were denied a penalty when Derek Cornelius appeared to be fouled in the box.

They will be up for the match. Will the US? It’s a fair question after the lackluster performance in their semifinal.

It’s a 3rd-place game between the #CanMNT 🇨🇦 vs. #USMNT 🇺🇸

It won’t feel like it, though.

That leaves Josh Sargent as the first-choice striker, finally healthy and hoping to bring his good Norwich City form back for international duty. Patrick Agyemang could also factor in after a strong showing in January camp.

Sergino Dest only just returned to club action from his ACL tear and is not yet fit for international duty, while Malik Tillman is absent due to an ankle issue. Antonee Robinson has withdrawn from the squad due to injury, which represents a major blow late in the leadup to this game. Johnny Cardoso and Auston Trusty were also scratched from the squad after being called in.
