Velocity’s Ford Mustang Restomod Keeps Things Classic

With such a wide following and production numbers well into the millions, it’s no wonder the original Ford Mustang is such a popular platform for a restomod. There are builds that turn them into widened, hunkered-down track monsters, and ones that let the imagination run wild, like BorromeodeSilva’s roofless desert racer.

Some, though, stick to the traditional restomod recipe, going to town on the mechanicals while letting the Mustang’s enduring looks speak for themselves. The latest entry in Floridian restomodder Velocity’s Signature Series is one of these.

It’s a new package for the 1967 and ’68 Mustang convertible, and on the surface, it mostly looks like an exceptionally well-kept original example. Underneath, though, it’s packing the 5.0-litre Coyote V8 from the modern-day Mustang, producing 460bhp and 420lb ft of torque. The gearboxes are both much more current, too, with the choice of a Tremec six-speed manual or Ford’s 10-speed automatic.

The chassis is in fact entirely new and comes from classic muscle specialists Roadster Shop. It gets independent front suspension with a beefed-up anti-roll bar and a multi-link setup at the rear in place of the original, rather agricultural leaf springs. It rides on adjustable Fox coilovers all round, and the all-new but original-looking 17-inch alloys are wrapped in Continental SportContact rubber. Power steering and four-piston brakes with an electronic servo help make it more liveable.

On the inside are new front bucket seats, optionally heated and ventilated. There’s more sound deadening, and retro-look HVAC and audio head units disguising modern fittings. Most impressively, the fabric roof is now fully motorised, while still sticking to the original design.

While the exterior looks largely original, the lights are all new LED units and there’s a new vented bonnet to allow the Coyote to breathe a little easier. Everything’s been resealed and re-hinged, and naturally, you can have it pretty much whatever paint colour you want.

Fancy one? As always in the world of restomods, you’ll have to fork out rather a lot: the Signature Series convertible starts at $329,900, or around £259,000. Alternatively, it’s available as a $30,000 (approx. £23,500) conversion for an existing Signature Series coupe.
