The 58-year-old’s last official fight was back in 2005 and we’re even further away from the height of “Iron Mike” hysteria in the 1990s. Still, he remains one of the most recognizable figures within boxing thanks to what he did inside the ring.
Tyson reflected to USA Today’s Josh Peter how he doesn’t need to fight again due to any sort of financial obligation. Beyond what he earned in his boxing career, he has branched out into the cannabis industry.
For Tyson, opposing Paul scratches a different itch.
“I want to perform in front of the world,” he said to Peter. “To me, that’s all I ever knew how to do since I was 14.”
Training for the bout has also made the former heavyweight champion more than aware of his athletic mortality. The event had to be delayed because of an issue related to his ulcer, and he acknowledged to Peter that “it’s hard to walk right now” thanks to all of his workouts.
Rather than being put off by the fact he’s clearly well past his prime, plenty of fans will be intrigued to see how much Tyson has left in the tank on Nov. 15.
