Chicago White Sox manager Pedro Grifol didn’t exactly hold back after Sunday’s 4-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.
“We got no hit through eight,” he told reporters. “We had a pinch hitter break it up. The rest of the guys, not the rest of the guys. Most of the guys were f–king flat today. Unacceptable. That’s all I got. Flat. Period. Major league game, you gotta respect it.”
Baltimore starter Kyle Bradish pitched seven no-hit innings but was removed from the game after throwing 103 pitches.
Danny Coulombe replaced him to start the bottom of the eighth, and pinch-hitter Danny Mendick launched a home run for Chicago’s only hit of the game. Former White Sox closer Craig Kimbrel eventually shut things down in the ninth to clinch the victory for the Orioles.
The performance from the offense wasted an impressive start for Garrett Crochet, who allowed just two earned runs and three hits while striking out 11 in six innings of work for the White Sox.
It still wasn’t enough, and the last place team in the American League Central fell to 15-39 with its fifth consecutive loss. The club is an ugly 1-9 in the last 10 games since it seemed like it somewhat turned the corner with a 6-2 stretch earlier this month.
It is only May 27, but the White Sox are largely just playing out the string at this point.
They are 21.5 games behind the first-place Cleveland Guardians and look nothing like a potential playoff contender who could turn things around in the second half of the season.
This is Grifol’s second season, and the frustration already appears to be building. He was just 61-101 last year and seems well on his way to another disappointing effort in 2024.
Next up is a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays, which just took two of three from the White Sox prior to Baltimore’s four-game sweep.
