Singer Ciara, who is married to Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson, found out during an episode of PBS’ Finding Your Roots that she is DNA cousins with Hall of Fame shortstop and New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter.

It’s been an interesting few weeks for the family, to say the least, as Wilson found himself benched on Sunday and in a very public dispute with the Broncos over his contract.

In essence, Wilson said the team threatened to bench him weeks ago if he didn’t remove the injury guarantees from his contract, setting up a showdown between the sides:

MarkMaske @MarkMaskeNEW: The NFLPA told the Broncos in Nov. 4 letter their threat to bench Russell Wilson over injury guarantee in contract was illegal and violated the CBA, creating the possibility for litigation and arbitration against the team and NFL. That normally would be enough to assume that Wilson’s days in Denver are numbered. The issue in this case is that the Broncos would be on the hook for around $85 million in dead cap if they parted ways.

Andrew Brandt @AndrewBrandtThe Broncos went all in on Russell Wilson with trade and financial compensation.
Now it appears they’re all out. And it will cost them.
If they cut him, they owe him $39M, which they can afford.
But would take an $85M Dead Cap hit, which no team can afford.
1/3 of the Cap.

Gregg Rosenthal @greggrosenthalRussell Wilson will count $35.4 million in dead cap money in 2024 and $49.6 million in 2025. It was unquestionably one of the worst trades (and extensions) in NFL history.

It’s a weird situation, to say the least. Maybe he can talk about it with Jeter at Ciara’s next family reunion.
