Descriptions:
Thousands of Ghanaians, enraged by the unpredictable power outage known as Dumsor, have thronged to the streets of Accra to demand a stop to it. “Power to the People” chants reverberate around Accra, making it abundantly evident that the people’s voices will not be muted. Instead of being a one-time act of disapproval, this demonstration represents a burgeoning movement for accountability from the NPP government.
The frequent Dumsor, which has been criticized for its detrimental effects on businesses, health, education, and several other sectors of the economy, is at the centre of the protesters’ demands. After multiple high-profile cases demonstrating the detrimental effects of frequent power outages on businesses, the call to end Dumsor gained traction. Indiscriminate justifications, disregard, and indifference
A lack of engagement, a lack of interest and loose justifications from stakeholders have inflamed the frustration of the public. Social media campaigns which were started by actress Yvonne Nelson to spread the word about and garner support for their cause proved useful as citizens came out in their numbers.
Protesters include actor and aspiring MP John Dumelo, Comedian DKB, civic leaders, civil rights activists, and ordinary individuals who were impacted by Dumsor all showed up to throw their weight behind the actress. They want the NPP administration to be held accountable and are demanding quick answers.
Significant media coverage and support for this protest came from several human rights organizations. But officials haven’t taken any concrete action yet, which has led to a tense stalemate between the public and the administration. The demonstrators’ unwavering resolve throughout the protests embodies the spirit of democracy and the persistent power of group action.
