Vikings add potential RB star to join Aaron Jones on depth chart by trading draft picks to 49ers
The Minnesota Vikings struck gold with veteran Aaron Jones as a free agent before last season.
Jones is still around and likely has some more yards left in his legs, but Minnesota is already thinking about its depth at the position as well as the future.
The Vikings made a sneaky but potentially huge move Saturday night when they traded for 49ers RB Jordan Mason.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Vikings gave up pick No. 160 this year and a sixth-rounder next year to get Mason and pick No. 187 this year.
Mason, a 25-year old out of Georgia Tech, spent his first three NFL seasons with the 49ers. He got his big break this last fall with Christian McCaffrey out for an extended injury absence.
Mason totaled 789 yards on 153 carries, good for a 5.2 yards per carry average. That included three 100-yard games across the first four weeks of the regular season.
The Vikings showed their overall desire for Mason by signing him to an extension as soon as they acquired him. It’ll be for two years and a guaranteed $7 million, per Schefter, with the chance to grow to as much as $12 million in total value.
This move comes as the Vikings await a final verdict at quarterback as to whether they sign Aaron Rodgers or stick with J.J. McCarthy as their QB1.
Regardless, they know they’re set at the running back position both for the present and the future.
