Vikings Should Pass on Aaron Rodgers

Just last week, it was announced that the New York Jets will move on from Aaron Rodgers after two seasons.

For many years, plenty of fans and media members have talked about how it would be interesting if Rodgers played for the Minnesota Vikings, given that his successor in Green Bay — Brett Favre — did the same.

To add more, Rodgers, like Favre, also went to the Jets after his time in Green Bay. Favre, though, only spent one year there.

Even the ones who did not think Minnesota should get Rodgers still thought it was a very fun subject to talk about. Minnesota is reportedly not interested in it, and they absolutely should not be.

Minnesota bringing in Favre does not mean they should do the same with Rodgers. Circumstances were much different 16 years ago for the organization than they are now. They were just a quarterback away from being in the Super Bowl, and they already knew Tarvaris Jackson would not be their franchise quarterback. He had three years to show he possibly could, but he did not prove he could be that guy.

Journeyman Sage Rosenfels was acquired before the Favre talk and interest began. Favre was going to be an upgrade over both, and he certainly showed in 2009 when he threw for 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions and helped Minnesota nearly make it to the Super Bowl even at age 40.

Minnesota just drafted a quarterback last year in J.J. McCarthy. Sooner or later, they need to know if he is the guy. After sitting out all last season with a knee injury, he deserves a shot in 2025. Rodgers is not the player he once was, and despite that, he could still come with a hefty price. Not only financially, but also, it could be a bad fit chemistry-wise.

Adding Rodgers to the team would bring plenty of national attention, but it should not be a thought. It would be very shocking if they even showed any interest. Getting Favre in 2009 was a great move, yes. This would not be.

It is McCarthy’s time now to show what he can do. Bringing Daniel Jones back to push him would be a good idea. Rodgers would not be a good idea at all. Would one of the best quarterbacks in history also be interested in mentoring McCarthy? Probably not. You can also bet that Rodgers would not be interested in competing for a job.

If Jones is re-signed and named the week one starter, McCarthy would take some time sooner or later in 2025.

Many other options are available, such as Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, and Jameis Winston. Even Joe Flacco would be a better option at this point. Jones could very well cost over $10 million for this upcoming season, but he knows the team and culture now, given that he spent part of last season with them. Maybe he already has a good relationship with McCarthy, too.

Where will Rodgers end up in 2025? Who knows? It certainly should not be Minnesota, though. Would he have been a good addition a few years ago? Sure, but not now.

Minnesota has a history of acquiring former Green Bay players, and maybe they will go after other former members of the organization not named Rodgers. Aaron Jones could be re-signed as well.

Rodgers is arguably a top-five quarterback of all time and still a decent one at age 41, but he is not the same, and it does not make sense for many teams in the league to acquire him or even consider him.
