“We will be back”

The Super Eagles were quite impressive at the AFCON, but they faltered in the final

Super Eagles attacker Kelechi Iheanacho has sent an apology to Nigerian fans following their loss to Cote d’Ivoire in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Soccernet.ng reports.

Nigeria had a impressive campaign at the AFCON in Ivory Coast. They started badly with a 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea in their first game, but they picked up the pace in their second game.

The Super Eagles then claimed wins against Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau in their remaining games of the group stage. They also, went past Cameroon, Angola, and South Africa in the knockout rounds to set up a final date with hosts Cote d’Ivoire.

Unfortunately, they were stopped on their tracks by the Elephants as they succumbed to a comeback loss. Leicester City star Kelechi Iheanacho was used sparingly in the competition and got his first appearance in the semi-final against South Africa. He was also introduced midway into the second half against Cote d’Ivoire in the final, but he could not help the Super Eagles.

Following the loss Iheanacho has sent an apology to Nigerian fans via his X page.

“Normally na this one dey pain pass wey you don see the trophy but you no touch am na wahala.

“We will be back. Thank you to all Nigerians that supported us. God bless you all, let’s keep believing. Thank you most high God,” Iheanacho wrote.

Next up for the Super Eagles is the World Cup qualifiers set for May this year.
