The 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season begins on Sunday with the iconic Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway.

The event, widely regarded as “the Great American Race,” has kicked off the NASCAR season every February since 1982. It’s the biggest car race in the world, and one of the most important events on the sports calendar year.

Last year, William Byron took his first Daytona 500 lead with four laps to go and held off Alex Bowman to win the event. Chase Elliott won Stage 1, while Ryan Blaney earned the Stage 2 victory.

Richard Petty has a series-best seven Daytona 500 wins, followed by Cale Yarborough with four. Denny Hamlin is the only active driver with multiple victories (3).

“Captain America” actor Anthony Mackie will serve as the race’s 2025 grand marshal. The 46-year-old, who has also appeared in films such as “8 Mile” and “Avengers: Endgame,” will deliver the most important line of the weekend: “gentlemen, start your engines.”
