What to Watch the Rest of February: The SAG Awards Will Be the Must-See Awards Show of the Year

The SAG Awards air live this coming Saturday (yes, Saturday) on Netflix, and whether you’re obsessed with awards show or lukewarm about them, this is one you’re not going to want to miss.

For one, after years of airing on TBS and TNT, Netflix bought the rights to air the ceremony starting with the 2023 show. Because the deal came together relatively quickly, the show aired on Netflix’s YouTube channel. However, this year it will air live on its own streaming platform, making it much easier to find, especially for those of us already spending our evenings at home watching the streamer.

Two, this will be the first SAG Awards since the four-month strike last year. SAG/AFTRA president Fran Drescher will be in attendance, and most likely get a standing ovation for shepherding the union through one of the toughest periods in its history. You often hear that the SAG award means the most to performers because it came from their peers. Well, because of the difficulties stemming from this past year, this time it’s going to mean even more.

Three, it’s the 30th anniversary, and award show producers love a milestone number. Expect lots of nostalgic moments.

Four, the legendary Barbra Streisand will receive the SAG Life Achievement Award. I mean, what more needs to be said?

And finally, it’s the last big award show for several fan favorites in their perspective roles/shows, namely Margot Robbie in Barbie (since she sadly—and wrongly—didn’t receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actress), Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and the cast of Ted Lasso. Even if they don’t win, it’s going to be nice just to see them together again.

(By the way, if you still need convincing, see how much fun we’ve had at SAG Awards in years past, and tell me this is not worth tuning in for?)

Meanwhile, if you need an awards show fix now, have no fear, because the People’s Choice Awards are here! (See what I did there? Too much? Okay.) That awards show airs on NBC this Sunday night (you can catch it on Peacock and E! as well). But if you’re hoping for Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce to make their red carpet debut since they’re both up for awards tonight (he for athlete of the year, she for five including pop artist of the year), then I’m sorry to disappoint. Swift will not be there, as she’s finishing up the Australia leg of her international Eras tour.

But if award shows aren’t your thing, there’s plenty of other offerings the rest of the month, including American Idol’s return on ABC, The Good Fight spinoff, Elsbeth, over on CBS, Dolly Parton’s Pet Gala (yes, a real thing that’s going to be amazing) on CBS, Shõgun on Hulu, and an exclusive clip from The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy from Prime Video.

Kylie Minogue and country superstar Lainey Wilson will perform, as well as Lenny Kravitz, who will receive the Music Icon Award. American Idol (ABC): The seventh season begins, and while all the headlines so far have been on Katy Perry’s eventual departure, get ready for another year of breakout talent. 8 p.m. ET/PT, 7 p.m. CT

Wednesday, February 21Constellation (AppleTV+): The psychological thriller stars Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as Jo, an astronaut who returns to Earth after a disaster in space, only to discover that key pieces of her life seem to be missing. Streaming

Dolly Parton’s Pet Gala (CBS/Paramount+): The two-hour variety special features musical performances, and a dog fashion show featuring Dolly Parton’s most iconic looks as well as embellished looks from Parton’s Doggy Parton pet line. No, I’m not making this up. Parton will be joined on the pink carpet by co-host Jane Lynch, with runway correspondents Kelly Osbourne and Rachel Smith. Performances include Lainey Wilson, Carly Pearce, Chris Janson and KC of KC and the Sunshine Band, and special guests include Iain Armitage, Drew Barrymore, Kristen Bell, Kristin Chenoweth, Margaret Cho, Neil Patrick Harris, Carson Kressley, Jim Nantz and Jessica Simpson. 9 p.m. ET/PT, 8 p.m. CT

Abbott Elementary (ABC): After a student is caught smoking, the Abbott staff decides to revamp the outdated drug policy. Meanwhile, Janine attempts to prep the new substitute teacher for her class but has trouble giving up her former role. 9 p.m. ET/PT, 8 p.m. CT

Thursday, February 22Law & Order (NBC): It’s Sam Waterston’s last episode playing District Attorney Jack McCoy. Tony Goldwyn (Scandal) will join the long-running series as the new district attorney. 8 p.m. ET/PT, 7 p.m. CT

Friday, February 23Drive Away Dolls (Focus Features): Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Bill Camp and Matt Damon star in this comedy caper written by Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke, and directed by Coen. The movie follows free spirit, Jamie, and her demure friend, Marian, who embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, which sounds great in theory until they cross paths with a bunch of inept criminals. In theaters

The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy (Prime Video): The eight-episode adult animated sci-fi comedy stars Keke Palmer, Stephanie Hsu, Maya Rudolph, Natasha Lyonne, Kieran Culkin and Sam Smith. The story follows Dr. Sleech and Dr. Klak, who are aliens, best friends, and intergalactically renowned surgeons, as they tackle anxiety-eating parasites, illegal time loops, and deep-space STIs. This makes me really think I need more exciting friends. Also, watch an exclusive clip below that features Dr. Klak (Keke Palmer) and her mother Dr. K (guest star Tracee Ellis Ross) doing an interview on a major radio show about Klak’s anxiety. Talk about a reason to make you more anxious! All episodes streaming

Tyler Perry’s Mea Culpa (Netflix): Tyler Perry writes and directs this film in which criminal defense attorney Mea Harper (Kelly Rowland) takes on the murder case of artist Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes), but the truth isn’t as clear cut as it appears. Streaming

Saturday, February 2430th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (Netflix): Live from the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles, get ready for the award show of the year where actors honor actors. See above for more. 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT/5 p.m. PT live, and streaming anytime

Sense & Sensibility (Hallmark Channel): Hallmark Mahogany presents this gorgeous adaptation of Sense & Sensibility, which stars Deborah Ayorinde, Bethany Antonia, Dan Jeannotte, and Akil Largie. 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT

Where is Wendy Williams? (Lifetime): All eyes will be on this two-night docuseries. Per the official press release, “After Wendy Williams was placed under a financial guardianship and her hit talk show was unexpectedly canceled, she was determined to make a career comeback. Opening the doors to her private life like never before, cameras chronicled her comeback journey to reclaim her life and legacy despite facing health issues and personal turbulence. With unparalleled access granted by Wendy to film with her and her family for nearly two years, what was captured was not what anyone expected.” 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT

Sunday, February 25Where is Wendy Williams? (Lifetime): Part two of the docuseries airs tonight. 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT

Tuesday, February 27God Save Texas (HBO/Max): The three part docuseries earned rave reviews when it premiered at Sundance last month. Each part is directed by a different filmmaker, including Texas natives Richard Linklater, Alex Stapleton and Iliana Sosa. And all three of the docuseries follows the filmmakers as they chronicle the complex history of each city, exploring how it intertwines with
their own provenance and evolution, and placing it in the larger picture of America
today. The trilogy is inspired by the book God Save Texas: A Journey into the Soul of
the Lone Star State by Lawrence Wright.

God Save Texas: Hometown Prison will debut tonight on HBO on Tuesday, February 27, while God Save Texas: The Price of Oil, and God Save Texas: La Frontera will premiere Wednesday, February 28. And if you’re not confused yet, all three are available to stream on Max on February 27 in case you have Max but not HBO.

Pathological: The Lies of Joran van der Sloot (Peacock): If you love watching true crime docuseries, then this one is for you. Per Peacock, “Through rare interviews with victims’ family members, eyewitnesses and experts on the criminal mind, this documentary reveals new insights into how Joran van der Sloot’s lifelong pattern of violence and pathological lying leads to the deaths of two young women. Few killers have ever murdered again after they became famous for another killing, but on the fifth anniversary of Natalee Holloway’s disappearance, Joran murders 21-year-old Stephany Flores in Peru. Hauntingly, his trip there is financed by money he extorted from Natalee Holloway’s mother, Beth, after falsely promising to reveal where Natalee’s body was for a price. In 2023—18 years after Natalee’s disappearance—Beth Holloway finally gets her day in court with Joran, who admits for the first time that he murdered her daughter. His admission brings some long-sought comfort to Natalee’s family, but Joran’s history of deceit and manipulation leads some to question the details in his latest story.” Streaming

Shõgun (Hulu, FX): The 10-episode series is an original adaptation of James Clavell’s bestselling novel, and features an acclaimed Japanese cast, which is rare for an American production. Set in Japan in the year 1600, Hiroyuki Sanada stars as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, who is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him. When a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village, its English pilot, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), comes bearing secrets that could help Lord Toranaga tip the scales of power. Two episodes streaming at launch on 2/27, followed by one a week

Wednesday, February 28Survivor (CBS): The new season begins with two hour-long episodes. 8 p.m. ET/PT, 7 p.m. CT

Thursday, February 29Elsbeth (CBS/Paramount+): In the pilot episode, Carrie Preston stars as her character from The Good Fight, Elsbeth Tascioni, an astute but unconventional attorney who has just left her successful legal career in Chicago to tackle a new investigative role in New York City. Says Preston: “I love her mind. She can say one thing, think another, and her body is doing another. I spend more time in prep for this character than any other I’ve ever played because of that.” Wendell Pierce and Carra Patterson also star, while Stephen Moyer makes a guest appearance. 10 p.m. ET/PT, 9 p.m. CT

The Tourist (Netflix): After season one aired on Max, season two (and season one) has moved to Netflix. Season one started streaming on Netflix on February 1, and season two drops on February 29. The series stars Jamie Dornan and Danielle Macdonald, and centers on a man (Dornan) who wakes up in the Australian outback with no memory. In season two, that man—called Elliot—and Helen (Danielle Macdonald) travel to Ireland to find answers about Elliot’s identity, but instead are forced to face the dangerous consequences of Elliot’s past actions. Streaming

Friday, March 1Spaceman (Netflix): Adam Sandler, Carey Mulligan, Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin, Isabella Rossellini and Paul Dano star in the film version of the novel, Spaceman of Bohemia. Here’s what we know, per Netflix: “Six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, an astronaut, Jakub (Adam Sandler), realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth. Desperate to fix things with his wife, Lenka (Carey Mulligan), he is helped by a mysterious creature from the beginning of time he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship. Hanuš (voiced by Paul Dano) works with Jakub to make sense of what went wrong before it is too late.” Streaming

Somebody Feed Phil (Netflix): All eight episodes drop at once as TV creator/food aficionado Phil Rosenthal embarks on new culinary adventures. This season, Phil travels to Mumbai, Washington, D.C., Kyoto, Iceland, Dubai, the “Real” Orlando, Taipei, and Scotland. Streaming
