Los Angeles County District Attorney Shares Major Announcement About The Case Of The Menendez Brothers
According to CNN, on Thursday, October 3, George Gascón, the Los Angeles County District Attorney, revealed that prosecutors are reviewing new evidence in the Menendez brother’s case. The outlet reports that prosecutors have obtained a letter previously written by Erik that “corroborates the allegations that he was sexually abused by his father.”

“I’ve been trying to avoid dad. It’s still happening Andy, but it’s worse for me now. I can’t explain it… I never know when it’s going to happen, and it’s driving me crazy. Every night I stay up thinking he might come in. I need to put it out of my mind,” the letter, reportedly addressed to Erik’s cousin, reads, per Fox 35 Orlando.

Attorneys for Erik and Lyle Menendez have reportedly asked the court to vacate the brothers’ 1996 conviction for the 1989 murder of their parents, Jose and Mary “Kitty” Menendez. Despite this, the outlet reports that Gascón maintains the brothers committed the murder. Therefore, his office will only review the new evidence and “make a decision on whether it warrants a resentencing.”

“We have not decided on an outcome. We are reviewing information,” Gascón reportedly explained.

Cliff Gardner, a lawyer for the Menendez brothers, reportedly reacted to the LA County District Attorney’s decision with a statement.

“Given today’s very different understanding of how sexual and physical abuse impacts children — both boys and girls — and the remarkable new evidence, we think resentencing is the appropriate result,” Gardner reportedly stated. “The brothers have served more than 30 years in prison. That is enough.”

Per CNN, a hearing has been scheduled for Friday, November 29.

Kim Kardashian Advocates For Erick & Lyle Menendez’s Release From Prison
According to the outlet, Erik and Lyle Menendez were 18 and 21, respectively, when they committed the murder of their parents. After multiple trials, they were given life sentences while “prosecutors contended there was no evidence of any molestation.” Additionally, the brothers were accused of seeking to obtain control of their parent’s multi-million dollar estate.

Furthermore, on Thursday, October 3, Kim Kardashian weighed in on the brothers’ conviction and sentencing. In a letter published by NBC News, Kardashian called for the release of the Menendez brothers from prison.

“…As is often the case, this story is much more complex than it appears on the surface. Both brothers said they had been sexually, physically, and emotionally abused for years by their parents,” Kardashian’s letter reads in part. “…The media turned the brothers into monsters and sensationalized eye candy — two arrogant, rich kids from Beverly Hills who killed their parents out of greed. There was no room for empathy, let alone sympathy. Erik and Lyle had no chance of a fair trial against this backdrop.”

Kardashian goes on to state that the brothers were not supported amid their sexual abuse claims because of their gender.

“Many people believe the crimes the brothers committed are unforgivable — but what about the decades of alleged abuse they suffered as children?” she adds.

Before concluding, Kardashian explains that she’s “spent time” with Erik and Lyle Menendez behind bars and believes “they are not monsters.”

“The killings are not excusable. I want to make that clear. Nor is their behavior before, during or after the crime. But we should not deny who they are today in their 50s,” she wrote. “…I don’t believe that spending their entire natural lives incarcerated was the right punishment for this complex case. Had this crime been committed and trialed today, I believe the outcome would have been dramatically different… With their case back in the spotlight — and considering the revelation of a 1988 letter from Erik to his cousin describing the abuse — my hope is that Erik and Lyle Menendez’s life sentences are reconsidered.”
