The Weeknd gears up for his big return to the stage with a one-night-only mega-concert in São Paulo, Brazil. The ‘never-before-seen’ production touches down on Friday, September 7.The Weeknd is making his long-awaited return to the stage with a blow-out spectacle billed as a “never-before-seen” one-night only production. The show touches down at Estádio MorumBIS in São Paulo on Friday, September 7.
Produced by Live Nation, the concert takes place on the heels of The Weeknd’s record-shattering After Hours Til Dawn Tour, which boasted 60 sold-out stadium dates with over 3 million attendees across North America, Latin America, Europe, and the UK.
Tickets for the latest concert will be available beginning with an artist presale on Monday, July 22 at 10AM BRT. Further presales will run throughout the week ahead of the general sale date on Thursday, July 25 at 10AM BRT.
Already an A-list performer, The Weeknd recently became the first Canadian artist to achieve seven diamond certified singles following the RIAA’s certification of “Save Your Tears” and “Die For You.” Moreover, he’s the fourth artist overall to achieve seven or more diamond tracks, designated by at least 10 million equivalent units sold. The Weeknd’s collaboration from last summer with Madonna and Playboi Carti, “Popular,” just became a whole lot more popular — the song has also been certified platinum by the RIAA. Initially released on June 2, 2023, the track was the second single from the now-scrapped soundtrack album, “The Idol, Vol. 1,” from the HBO drama series of the same name in which The Weeknd starred. The accompanying music video debuted in February as an exclusive release during Fortnite Festival, as part of The Weeknd’s takeover event during its first season.
“Popular” also sparked a wave of extra popularity for Madonna, adding her to the elite group of artists who have earned a spot on the Billboard Hot 100 across five different decades. Her most recently released song to have reached platinum status was her collab with Justin Timberlake, “4 Minutes,” which debuted in 2008 and achieved platinum that same year. Further, her 1986 hit single, “Papa Don’t Preach,” was certified platinum just last month.
Madonna’s Celebration Tour ended in May with a trip to Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach, with a gigantic free show for over 1.6 million fans. That engagement was the last performance during her worldwide retrospective tour, as well as her only stop in South America. The perfect storm of a free show in a major cultural hub made for the biggest live crowd of Madonna’s 40-plus year career.Copacabana Beach has a notable history when it comes to concert spectacles, with the Rolling Stones playing to an estimated 1.5 million fans there in 2006, while Rod Stewart’s New Year’s Eve show in 1994 reportedly drew in a whopping 4.2 million attendees.
Since he’s playing in São Paulo rather than Copacabana Beach, it’s hard to say whether The Weeknd’s upcoming spectacle will draw in a comparable crowd to Madonna’s recent performance. But given his consistent presence as a top artist on both the Billboard charts and Spotify indicates that his one-night stand will be an event to remember.
