Why Is Lyfe Jennings Beefing With Muni Long? An Explainer Of Their Feud

What started as a joke has ended (for now) with a diss track.

Lyfe Jennings and Muni Long have been at odds since last week over his 2004 record, “Must Be Nice,” and admittedly, this R&Beef was not on anyone’s bingo card.

Ironically, Jennings recently spoke with VIBE about the legacy of his hit single. “I know when you hear that song, it’s automatically gonna take you back to where you were when the song came out,” the 47-year-old artist explained.

Jennings noted that “it’s amazing” for the song to still resonate with fans after 20 years. Later expressing, “It’s humbling to me and it’s a reminder that you can still do something meaningful out here and still get the accolades.”

However, we’re sure this feud wasn’t the meaningful reminder he was anticipating. So, if you’re wondering how Muni’s comment turned into a diss track, check out the full breakdown below.

“Hatin’ A** N***a”

Last week, Muni Long took to Threads with some lighthearted criticism about “Must Be Nice.”

“Maturing is realizing Lyfe Jennings was really a hatin a** ninja… ‘Must Be Nice’ is crazy,” she wrote.

As the comment gained traction, she replied, “Y’all got Lyfe mad at me [for real]. Man I was just playing… I actually never listened to the whole song cause as a kid, I didn’t like it.” Lyfe later responded on Instagram.

“Be blessed”

Upon seeing Muni’s sentiment, Lyfe first fired back, “What I do to Muni Long? It’s Sunday man damn.”

Through The Shade Room, he slightly mocked her initial statement and commented, “Maturing is realizing that looking through a filter of trauma will have you seeing grey skies where there are only blue. I’m still a fan, Miss Long. Be blessed.”

Many assumed this was the end of the strife, but it was only one battle in the war until a separate comment lit a fire within Jennings.

Doubling Down?

It’s unclear which post Muni commented under, but the singer quipped, “So you wasn’t hating? [laughing emoji] Don’t lie.”

An infuriated Lyfe clapped back, “So u leave me a message doubling down on ya post after u said it was a joke? Callin a grown man a hating a** n***a is wild work even as a joke. I’ve never been that ma’am. But what I have been is humble enough to hold, in high regard, those that came before me and celebrate them as deserved.”

He then quoted J. Cole’s “Love Yourz,” when teasing the diss track. “Good news is you came a long way; Bad news is you went the wrong way.” He concluded the sentiment by adding, “I’m bout to show u what writing is.” (For context, Muni’s career began as a songwriter and she’s penned several hits including Ariana Grande’s “Imagine,” Rihanna’s “California King Bed,” Pitbull and Ke$ha’s “Timber,” and K. Michelle’s “V.S.O.P.”.)

The Apology

Before he could get to the diss track, Muni apologized and it seems she did so publicly and privately.

“Hey man, if I hurt your feelings, that’s valid. I can take that and apologize,” she replied.

She confirmed that the initial comment was “meant as a joke and no disrespect.” Muni continued, “This is getting blown WAY out of proportion, which is what I said to you in my direct message.”

That DM was not shared from either party, but she added, “I can’t tell you how to feel at all, again, no disrespect. I apologize. I’m done with it now I’ve addressed you directly and publicly. Have a nice day!”

It’s also unclear when that DM exchange transpired.

“Made For This”

Despite the apology, Lyfe still dropped a diss track over Muni’s hit, “Made For Me.”

Titled “Made For This,” the crooner sang, “The smell of your trauma/ Is all over ya Prada/ Your shoes Balenciaga/ But your spirit’s givin Benihana/ I think I’m due a little respect/ Been in this s**t for 20 years/ Did you forget?/ Twin, where have you been?/ Nobody knows you like I do/ You strong, Black woman/ Talented too/ I can’t deny it/ I would never try it.”

He did acknowledge her apology, but didn’t believe that it was sincere. Yet, he encouraged her to keep “using her gift,” stating, “Muni Long, you was made for this. Whatever you goin’ through baby, put it on paper. We need you.”

Beyond a shady cackle on her Instagram Stories, she has not verbally addressed the diss in any way.
