Why Ty France is playing for George Springer in Blue Jays’ lineup in World Series Game 3

For those tuning into the World Series Game 3 late, something weird has happened.

Ty France is hitting in the leadoff spot for the Toronto Blue Jays, a position normally occupied by George Springer.

France is a journeyman, a versatile fielder who bats better against lefties than righties. Springer is an all-time great and a postseason hero.

But Toronto didn’t have a choice.

Why is Ty France playing for George Springer? The Blue Jays had to pull Springer because he got hurt.

Springer took a swing and reacted in pain.

It appeared Springer may have injured his oblique.

Regardless of the exact injury, after speaking with trainers, Springer came out of the game.

France entered.

The Blue Jays likely used him there because Springer is in the DH spot, and France was the least likely of the Toronto bench bats to be needed later in the field.

It’s still a major downgrade, but maybe France can deliver.
