Will Steelers Pursue Aaron Rodgers? Bill Cowher Makes Feelings Clear on Whether Pittsburgh Will Target $37.5 Million QB

There are several teams in the NFL that could be looking for a new quarterback this offseason, including the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers had some success with Russell Wilson under center this past season. However, the season derailed late in the year, resulting in a disappointing playoff loss. Now, there is some speculation about a potential union with Aaron Rodgers.

Former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher weighed in on the possibility and believes the Piitsburg will have conversations with the veteran quarterback.

Rodgers’ future has become one of the biggest storylines of the NFL offseason. The four-time MVP had one of his worst seasons as an NFL starter after coming back last year from a devastating Achilles injury. But with the Jets officially wanting to move on from the 41-year-old veteran, the Steelers have been discussed as one of the potential landing spots for him.

Cowher, who coached Pittsbrug from 1992-2006, recently discussed the possibility during an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show. He suggested that the Steelers were willing to go with veterans to produce quick results and that they would also have a conversation with Rodgers.

“I think there’s going to be a sense of urgency,” Cowher said. “Taking some guys on the back end of their careers. T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward. They’re in the latter stages of their careers. So they want to win now.”

“That’s a big part of what they want to do, but you’ve also got to have a plan moving forward and at that position. There will be dialogue there, but those will be conversations taking place in that building.”

Steelers had quarterbacks Justin Fields and Wilson split the time under center this season, with the former leading them to a 4-2 record and the latter going 6-5.

While each finished their campaigns with a winning record, it’s quite obvious at least one of the two is walking in free agency. Few would be surprised to see Wilson and Fields, who are ranked 81 and 46, respectively, in PFSN’s Top 100 Free Agent Rankings, take jobs elsewhere next season, especially if the Steelers don’t push to re-sign either.

“I don’t know where they are right now in terms of their quarterback situation with Russell and Justin,” Cowher added. “I think a decision has to be made: ‘What’s the future plan, and what is the plan in the interim?’”

Meanwhile, Rodgers played a full 17 games in 2024 and completed 63% of his passes while throwing for nearly 3900 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He also had a QB+ of 72.2, ranking 21st in the league, while Wilson was 17th.

Both the Steelers and Jets have tough decisions to make in the offseason. Whether Rodgers leaves New York is still up in the air. In any event, a Tomlin offense led by the future Hall of Famer would certainly be a sight to behold.
