Wolfsburg star Oberdorf to join Bayern this summer

Lena Oberdorf will join Bayern Munich from Wolfsburg this summer on a contract until 2028.

It is reported that Wolfsburg have pocketed in the region of €400,000 (£340,500) from the release clause in Oberdorf’s contract ahead of her impending move to the Bavarians at the end of the season.

“I had good conversations with head coach Alexander Straus and department head Bianca Rech and I really liked the club’s vision of what they want to achieve in the next few years,” Oberdorf told the club website.

“I was also shown where my potential lies and what else can be gotten out of me. I don’t think I’m a complete player yet – but I want to get there. I will continue to give everything for VfL Wolfsburg until the summer and then look forward to the new challenge.”

Bayern Munich women’s department manager Bianca Rech added: “Lena Oberdorf is one of the most talented players in Germany and has a great future ahead of her.

“We are very happy that we were able to convince Lena to join FC Bayern. We look forward to her playing for us from the summer onwards because we are convinced that Lena, as a footballer, represents the values that we need in order to continue to be successful in the future.”

The 22-year-old has already earned 44 caps for Germany and won the European Championships at under-17 level.

She was also part of the DFB-Frauenteam side that reached the Euro 2022 final as Germany were beaten 2-1 after extra time by England in the final, and she was named the best young player of the tournament.

For now, the midfielder will be focusing on getting the better of Bayern in a tense Frauen-Bundesliga title race.

Wolfsburg are only one point adrift of Bayern in the title race and face off against their rivals on March 23.
