Yankees 2024 transaction tracker: Victor González designated for assignment among several pitching moves
Here is a look at the latest Yankees roster moves…
June 21, 3:42 p.m.
The Yankees shook up their bullpen with three moves before opening a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves.
Chief among them, New York designated LHP Victor González. In 23.1 IP over 27 games this season, he struck out 11 and walked 13 while pitching to a 1.11 WHIP and 3.86 ERA.
In a pair of corresponding moves, the Yankees signed RHP Phil Bickford to an MLB contract and selected him to the active roster while recalling RHP Yoendrys Gómez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Bickford, whom New York signed to a minor league contract on April 2, struck out 35 and walked 12 while pitching to a 1.27 WHIP and 2.93 ERA in 27.2 IP over 22 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Gómez, in 12 starts this season, had a 3.13 ERA and 1.17 WHIP over 46 IP at the Triple-A level.
June 20, 9:35 p.m.
Following Thursday’s loss to the Baltimore Orioles, the Yankees announced they have optioned right-handed reliever Ron Marinaccio to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The move doesn’t come as a surprise as the Yankees burned through nearly 10 different relievers over the last two games and they’ll need some reinforcements for their three-game set with the Atlanta Braves.
A corresponding move was not announced by the club.
The 28-year-old reliever has appeared in 13 games this season, posting a 2.84 ERA while striking out 19 batters over 19 innings pitched. Marinaccio was recalled back on June 9 but with an option remaining, he was the odd man out.
June 12, 5:53 p.m.
The Yankees announced that they returned Jasson Dominguez from his rehab assignment, and reinstated him from the 60-day IL.
With the move, Dominguez was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. While this was expected, the move means Dominguez is healthy enough to join the major league club if needed.
In seven games with Triple-A this season, he’s hitting .400 with two home runs and drove in three RBI.
With Dominguez reinstated from the 60-day, the Yankees moved INF Jon Berti to the 60-day IL so Dominguez could return to the 40-man roster.
Berti landed on the IL with a calf strain at the end of May.
May 21, 11:45 p.m.
Following Tuesday’s loss to the Seattle Mariners, the Yankees optioned LHP Clayton Andrews to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Andrews made his Yankees debut in Tuesday’s game where he pitched 0.1 innings, giving up a solo home run and striking out one batter.
The move is to make room for RHP Tommy Kahnle, who is eligible to be activated on Wednesday. The 34-year-old is set to return from the IL that sidelined him since spring training when he went down with a shoulder injury.
Last season for the Yankees, Kahnle pitched to a 2.66 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP in 42 games.
May 4, 10:00 a.m.
The Yankees activated versatile infielder Jon Berti from the injured list prior to Saturday afternoon’s game against the Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium.
Berti’s missed the last three weeks due to a groin strain, but he’s been progressing well in his rehab of late, and now he appears ready to make his return to the team.
The veteran speedster was just 4-for-19 across six appearances prior to the injury.
In a corresponding roster move, outfielder Taylor Trammell has been designated for assignment.
Trammell, a former Top 100 prospect, logged a hit and a walk in his only two at-bats in pinstripes after being picked up off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
April 8, 4:24 p.m.
The Yankees made a series of roster moves involving bullpen arms before opening a three-game set with the Miami Marlins on Monday night at Yankee Stadium.
The Yanks signed left-hander Josh Maciejewski, 28, to a big-league contract and placed him on the 26-man roster.
Maciejewski split time between Triple-A and Double-A last season, at the upper level he pitched to a 3.42 ERA and 1.437 WHIP over 16 appearances and 23.2 innings. With Somerset, he had a 3.06 ERA and 1.189 WHIP over 11 appearances and 17.2 innings.
In corresponding moves, right-hander Jake Cousins was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to make room on the active roster and left-hander Clayton Andrews was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Maciejewski.
Cousins, who recently arrived in a trade with the White Sox after he was DFA by Chicago, appeared in two games for the Yanks, allowing three runs (one earned) over 3.0 innings of work. The 29-year-old did surrender four hits (one home run) while walking three and striking out four.
April 2, 8:11 p.m.
The Yankees traded veteran left-handed pitcher Nick Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the club announced Tuesday.
New York received cash considerations for the 34-year-old reliever.
Ramirez was designated for assignment on Saturday when lefty Tanner Tully was added to the 40-man roster. Tully was later DFA’d when right-hander Jake Cousins – acquired Sunday in a trade with the Chicago White Sox – was added to the 26-man roster.
Ramirez appeared in 32 games out of the bullpen, pitching to a 2.66 ERA (2.94 FIP) with a 1.230 WHIP in 40.2 innings during his lone season in the Bronx.
In addition, the Yankees signed RHP Phil Bickford to a minor league deal worth $1.1 million, according to the NY Post’s Jon Heyman.
Bickford appeared in 61 games between the Mets and Dodgers in 2023, pitching to a 4.95 ERA and 1.455 WHIP.
April 1, 5:20 p.m.
Ahead of Monday night’s game in Arizona, the Yankees signed right-handed reliever Jake Cousins to a major league contract and assigned him to the 26-man roster.
Cousins was acquired in a trade with the Chicago White Sox for cash considerations on Sunday. The 29-year-old with a career 3.08 ERA and 1.386 WHIP in 52.2 big league innings over three seasons had signed a minor league deal with Chicago in the offseason.
In a corresponding move, left-hander Tanner Tully was designated for assignment. He was called up on Saturday from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre but did not appear in a game with the Yanks.
March 30: 6:14 p.m.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced that the team optioned RHP Clayton Beeter to Triple-A on Saturday and called up LHP Tanner Tully.
Beeter made his MLB debut in Friday’s win over the Astros, giving up just one hit in his one inning of work. Beeter, who was featured in the Future’s Game a year ago and was acquired in the Joey Gallo deal with the Dodgers, is one of the team’s top pitching prospects.
“Really just being thin down there [in the bullpen],” Boone said of the reason for the option via MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. “Him being a starting pitcher and his [injury] history, not wanting to put him in a bad situation.”
The move is precautionary and with Beeter not expected to pitch for a little while, Boone wanted to shore up his bullpen for the completion of this four-game series with Houston.
Tully is not on the 40-man roster, so LHP Nick Ramirez was designated for assignment to make room for him.
March 25, 6:15 p.m.
With the beginning of the season just days away, the Yankees are starting to finalize their Opening Day roster.
Aaron Boone announced prior to Monday’s spring game that Oscar Gonzalez, Kevin Smith, Greg Allen, Jose Rojas and Dennis Santana have been re-assigned to the minors.
Gonzalez is a bit of a surprise cut as he recorded six extra-base hits and a .945 OPS this spring after being picked up off waivers from the Guardians.
Santana, who pitched for the Mets last season, is also surprising as he allowed just three runs and struck out ten across six impressive spring appearances.
March 18, 6:30 p.m.
The Yankees have optioned INF Jorbit Vivas to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Vivas, who is the team’s 10th-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline, was acquired alongside LHP Victor Gonzalez in an offseason deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The 23-year-old made a strong first impression with his new organization, homering twice and posting an .898 OPS across 14 spring games.
Mar. 9, 5:45 p.m.
The Yankees announced after Saturday’s game that they have optioned catcher Agustin Ramirez to Double-A Somerset.
Ramirez, who is the franchise’s No. 22 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, saw limited action in eight spring training games this year. He went 2-for-13 with a double and an RBI but six strikeouts.
With Jose Trevino, Austin Wells and Ben Rortvedt fighting for two catcher’s spots on the roster, Ramirez — who is just 22 years old — will start the season with the Somerset Patriots.
Mar. 5, 5:05 p.m.
After Tuesday’s spring training game against the Mets, the Yankees reassigned outfielder outfielder Spencer Jones and three others to minor league camp.
Jones, the No. 2 prospect in the Yanks’ system and MLB Pipeline’s No. 84 prospect in all of baseball, had a solid performance in big league camp, with six hits in 13 at-bats with a home run and four RBI. The six-foot-six 22-year-old is expected to start the season at Double-A Somerset.
Infielders Jeter Downs and Caleb Durbin and outfielder Brandon Lockridge were also reassigned to minor league camp.
Feb. 28, 3:07 p.m.
The Yankees have claimed infielder Jahmai Jones from the Milwaukee Brewers, the team announced Wednesday.
Jones, 26, appeared in seven games for Milwaukee in 2023, where he went 2-for-10 with a double and three RBI. Jones, who primarily plays second base, spent the bulk of 2023 in Triple-A, where he hit .268/.413/.466 with 12 home runs and drove in 48 runs.
Over parts of three big league seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, Baltimore Orioles, and Brewers, Jones has gone 15-for-84 with four doubles and seven RBI in 36 career games.
To make room for Jones, infielder Jordan Groshans was designated for assignment.
Feb. 18, 2:25 p.m.
After designating him for assignment on Feb. 13, the Yankees have traded LHP Matt Krook to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for cash considerations.
Krook gave up 11 earned runs in four innings of work over four games, giving him a 24.75 ERA. Although, he pitched to a 1.32 ERA in 27 games across 34 innings in Triple-A.
Krook was originally drafted by the Miami Marlins with the No. 35 overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft, but he opted to attend the University of Oregon instead after he had failed a physical. He eventually had Tommy John surgery during his freshman season. The San Francisco Giants then drafted him in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft and was among players included in the team’s deal with the Tampa Bay Rays for Evan Longoria.
The Yankees selected Krook from the Rays in the minor league phase of the 2020 Rule 5 draft.
Feb. 16, 3:13 p.m.
The Yankees have claimed RHP McKinley Moore off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies.
To make room on the 40-man roster, RHP Lou Trivino — who is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery — was placed on the 60-day IL.
Moore, 25, made his big league debut last season for the Phils, allowing seven runs in 3.1 innings of work.
He has a 3.92 career ERA and 1.56 WIP in four minor league seasons, with a strikeout rate of 13.5 per nine.
Feb. 13, 3:25 p.m.
The Yankees claimed infielder Jordan Groshans off waivers from the Miami Marlins on Tuesday.
Groshans, 24, batted .243 (112-for-460) with six home runs and 60 RBI in 125 games with Triple-A Jacksonville in 2023. He has starting experience at first base (41 games) and third base (77 games).
The Texas native does have some major league experience. In 2022, Groshans appeared in 17 games and hit .262 (16-for-61) with one home run and two RBI. He appeared at third base in all 17 games that season.
To make room for Groshans, the Yankees designated left-handed pitcher Matt Krook for assignment.
In four appearances last season, Krook gave up 11 earned runs in four innings of work (24.75 ERA). He did have better success in Triple-A, where he pitched to a 1.32 ERA in 27 games across 34 innings.
Jan. 25, 3:28 p.m.
The Yankees have signed catcher Luis Torrens to a minor league deal, according to the team’s transaction page.
Torrens split time between two teams in 2023. He played in 13 games with the Chicago Cubs and five games with the Seattle Mariners. In that time, the 27-year-old backstop went 7-for-28 with three doubles and four RBI.
The Yankees signed Torrens as a free agent out of Venezuela in 2013. He played in the Yankees’ farm system until 2016, when he was taken by the San Diego Padres in the Rule 5 Draft.
Jan. 24, 4:50 p.m.
The Yankees made some moves on Wednesday, outrighting INF Jeter Downs and OF Oscar Gonzalez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
After New York claimed Downs off waivers from the Washington Nationals on Dec. 19, 2023, the team designated the infielder for assignment last week. The 25-year-old went unclaimed and is now in the Yanks’ minor league system.
Gonzalez was claimed off waivers prior to Downs on Dec. 1 from the Cleveland Guardians. Just like Downs, he was then designated for assignment on Jan. 17 before going unclaimed.
The 26-year-old has played two seasons in the majors – both in Cleveland – and has found some success in just over 500 at-bats. The outfielder slashed .269/.299/.413 across 145 games with the Guardians and has 13 home runs, 34 doubles and 55 RBI in his career.
Additionally, OF Bubba Thompson was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins after New York DFA’d the 25-year-old on Jan. 19. Thompson is a former first-round draft pick by the Texas Rangers in 2017 and was claimed off waivers by the Yanks in early January from the Cincinnati Reds.
Jan. 19, 3:58 p.m.
The Yankees have claimed INF/OF Diego Castillo off waivers from the Mets.
To make room on the 40-man roster, INF Jeter Downs was designated for assignment.
Castillo was previously in the Yankees organization after signing as a free agent in 2014. He was dealt along with Hoy Park to the Pirates for Clay Holmes in July 2021.
Castillo spent last season at Triple-A Reno in Arizona’s system, appearing in 124 games and slashing .331/.431/.410 for a .840 OPS. He smacked 33 doubles with three home runs and 72 RBI. He walked 97 times with 79 strikeouts over 556 plate appearances.
He does have some big-league experience, appearing in 96 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022 where he slashed .206/.251/.382 with a .633 OPS. Castillo had 13 doubles and 11 homers with 29 RBI over 262 at-bats with 75 strikeouts to 14 walks.
The 26-year-old has spent time across shortstop, second and third base during his minor league career across three organizations.
He also has spent some time in the outfield, as he played the majority of his innings (535) in left field at Triple-A in 2023 after playing 137.1 innings (out of 614.1 innings total) in right field for the Pirates.
Dec. 21, 1:44 p.m.
New York and free agent outfielder Luis Gonzalez have agreed to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training, per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
Gonzalez last played in the big leagues in 2022 with the San Francisco Giants. In 98 games, the Mexico native slashed .251/.320/.357 with four home runs and 36 RBI from the left side of the plate. He also had 17 doubles, two triples and added 10 steals on 12 attempts.
The 28-year-old made his debut in 2020 with the Chicago White Sox and after a brief tenure spanning two seasons, he moved to San Francisco for one season before the Giants designated him for assignment on Aug. 14 2023.
The Yanks also signed RHP Nick Burdi on Thursday to a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training, per YES Network’s Jack Curry.
Burdi is a 30-year-old pitcher who appeared in three games for the Chicago Cubs last season. Across 19 big league appearances in his career, Burdi is 2-2 with a 9.39 ERA in 15.1 innings. He’s whiffed 27 batters and walked 10.
Dec. 14, 9:50 p.m.
Just days after signing him to a minor league deal, the Yankees have traded outfielder Billy McKinney to the Pirates in exchange for international bonus pool money, according to numerous reports.
The journeyman outfielder enjoyed a decent showing in his return to the Bombers, posting three doubles, six homers and a .726 OPS across 48 games last season.
Pittsburgh is McKinney’s seventh team as he’s also spent time with the Blue Jays, Dodgers, Mets, Athletics, and Brewers over his six-year career.
He’s capable of playing all three corner outfield spots and first base.
Dec. 14, 6:45 p.m.
The Yankees have made a depth addition to their bullpen, signing
RHP Duane Underwood Jr. to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Underwood spent the past three seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates and he pitched to a 4.49 ERA and 1.43 WHIP with 136 strikeouts over that span.
The 29-year-old struggled for most of last season, as he was DFA’d after just 20 appearances. After clearing waivers, he posted 6.30 ERA in Triple-A.
Dec. 11, 11:05 a.m.
The Yankees and Dodgers are executing a swap of players to open up two spots on Los Angeles’ 40-man roster so they can complete the free agent signings of Shohei Ohtani and Joe Kelly.
New York is dealing shortstop prospect Trey Sweeney for left-handed pitcher Victor Gonzalez and infielder Jorbit Vivas.
Gonzalez, 28, appeared in 34 games for the Dodgers a season ago, his first season back in the big leagues after losing 2022 to injury. The lefty reliever made 34 appearances (one start) and posted a 4.01 ERA (3.40 FIP) and 1.099 WHIP over 33.2 innings. Gonzalez had 10 walks to 30 strikeouts on the year.
The lefty relies on a three-pitch repertoire: sinker (63.7 percent in 2023); slider (29.8 percent); changeup (6.5 percent). His sinker averaged 94.6 mph and he posted a 54.3 ground ball percentage last campaign, per Statcast.
Overall, Gonzalez has made 93 big league appearances (89.1 innings) to his name with a 3.22 ERA with a 2.77 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
He made eight appearances in the 2020 postseason, including four games in the World Series, pitching to a 2.70 ERA over 6.2 innings. Gonzalez was the winning pitcher in the series-clinching Game 6 for the Dodgers.
Vivas, 22, was the No. 10 prospect in LA’s system prior to the trade, according to MLB Pipeline. He split time between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City last year, posting a .827 OPS in 109 games at Tulsa and a .633 OPS in 26 games in Oklahoma City.
Across both levels, Vivas slashed .269/.381/.407 for a .788 OPS with 13 home runs and 63 RBI in 135 games. He played the majority of his time at second base with 12 appearances coming at third.
Sweeney, 23, was the No. 8 prospect in the Yanks’ system, per MLB Pipeline. In 100 games at Double-A Somerset last year he slashed .252/.367/.411 for a .777 OPS with 13 home runs and 49 RBI. He did score 67 runs with 65 walks to 90 strikeouts.
Dec. 6, 2:35 p.m.
A day after trading three right-handed pitchers to acquire Alex Verdugo from Boston, the Yankees lost three more right-handed arms in the MLB Rule 5 draft.
The Oakland A’s used the first pick to select righty Mitch Spence before the Kansas City Royals used the second pick on righty Matt Sauer. The World Series champion Texas Rangers grabbed righty Carson Coleman with the 25th pick.
Spence, 25, spent last season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he made 29 starts and pitched to a 4.91 ERA and 1.319 WHIP over 163 innings. He was the Yanks’ 10th-round selection in the 2019 draft out of college.
Sauer, who turns 25 in January, was the 54th overall pick (Round 2) in 2017 and bounced around the Yanks minor league system during his time with the organization. Across three levels in 2023, he pitched to a 3.41 ERA and 1.149 WHIP over 17 games (16 starts) and 74.0 innings.
Coleman, 25, did not pitch last year, but split time between Somerset and High-A Hudson Valley in 2022. In total, he pitched to a 2.42 ERA and 0.884 WHIP over 44 relief appearances and 63.1 innings.
The Yankees did not make a selection during the MLB portion of the draft.
Dec. 1, 2:16 p.m.
The Yankees acquired some potential outfield depth on Friday by claiming outfielder Oscar Gonzalez off waivers from the Cleveland Guardians.
Gonzalez, 25, hit .214/.239/.312 with two home runs and 12 RBI in 173 at-bats this past season.
He fared much better in his rookie season in 2022, when he hit .296/.327/.461 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI in 93 games with the Guardians and also had two walk-off hits in the postseason, including one against the Yankees.
Gonzalez ended the 15-inning scoreless wild-card game against the Rays to send Cleveland to the ALDS.
In Game 3 of the ALDS, he roped a walk-off single against Clarke Schmidt in the bottom of the ninth to give the Guardians a 6-5 victory over the Yankees.
Sept. 30, 5:30 p.m.
The Yankees announced a few moves prior to Saturday’s game against the Kansas City Royals.
Jasson Dominguez was transferred to the 60-day injured list while RHP Frankie Montas was reinstated from the 60-day IL and Randy Vasquez was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Montas, who has made two rehab appearances, will be in a “backup” role for the final two games of the season before he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
Sept. 29, 4:45 p.m.
Prior to Friday’s series opener against the Kansas City Royals, the Yankees announced they reinstated right-hander Keynan Middleton (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list.
Right-hander Yoendrys Gomez was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Gomez pitched two scoreless innings in Thursday’s game against the Blue Jays, striking out four batters.
Middleton was the notable acquisition at the trade deadline this year. In 11 appearances since being acquired from the Chicago White Sox, Middleton has a 0.68 ERA and 0.83 WHIP with 17 strikeouts in 13.1 innings pitched. For the season, the 30-year-old has a 2-2 record with a 3.08 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 64 strikeouts in 49.2 innings pitched.
Sept. 14, 5:05 p.m.
Ahead of Game 2 of the doubleheader in Boston, the Yankees added right-handed pitcher Luke Weaver to the active roster and optioned right-hander Matt Bowman to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Manager Aaron Boone said Weaver can give the club coverage out of the bullpen and he is also a candidate to start a game this weekend in Pittsburgh.
Weaver, 30, made 26 appearances (22 starts) this season for Cincinnati and Seattle before he was claimed off the waivers from the Mariners earlier this week.
He’s pitched to a 6.77 ERA (5.75 FIP) with a 1.61 WHIP in 110.1 innings this season, allowing 85 runs (83 earned) on 141 hits with 37 walks and 93 strikeouts while surrendering 26 homers.
New York will be the fifth team he has pitched for in the last two seasons.
Bowman pitched the ninth inning of the first game of the twin billing, allowing a three-run homer to the Red Sox’s Trevor Story in the Yanks’ 5-0 defeat. The 32-year-old conceded three runs on two hits and a walk with one strikeout in his second outing with New York since he was called up on Sept. 10.
Sept. 11, 12:30 p.m.
With Jasson Dominguez’s brief taste of major league action in 2023 now over, the Yankees officially placed him on the 10-day IL with a right UCL tear.
Aaron Boone announced the diagnosis after Sunday’s game, as Dominguez was initially in the lineup but was scratched just before first pitch. Now, one of the most exciting prospects in all of baseball is heading for Tommy John surgery and will be sidelined into the 2024 regular season.
To take Dominguez’s spot on the 28-man roster, outfielder Estevan Florial has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Once a top prospect in his own right, Florial hasn’t panned out the way the Yankees had hoped. The 25-year-old has 30 games of major league experience, slashing just .185/.302/.278 with one homer and three RBI.
Sept. 3, 4 p.m.
The Yankees recalled RHP Greg Weissert from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The move comes as New York places RHP Ian Hamilton on the 15-day IL.
Most recently, Weissert appeared with the Yankees in an Aug. 18 game against the Boston Red Sox — an 8-3 loss. Weissert allowed one run on two hits while striking out two in two innings.
Weissert, who debuted with New York as a 27-year-old rookie during the 2022 season, has a 4.15 ERA and 1.62 WHIP this year. In 8 2/3 IP over seven games, Weissert has allowed four runs on nine hits (two home runs) while striking out nine and walking five.
Through 40 1/3 IP spanning 38 games (all relief appearances) with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season, the 28-year-old Weissert has gone 5-3 with a 2.90 ERA and 1.09 WHIP.
Sept. 1, 12:18
The Yankees called up OF Jasson Dominguez, C Austin Wells and RHP Randy Vasquez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Reports surfaced Wednesday that New York was set to promote Dominguez and Wells, and Aaron Boone and Anthony Volpe weighed in on the potential additions Thursday.
Dominguez (No. 2), Wells (No. 8) and Vazquez (No. 14) are among the Yankees’ top 15 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline.
Dominguez, 20, split the 2023 season with 118 games between Double-A Somerset (109) and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (nine). In the small sample size since his Aug. 22 promotion, he slashed .419./514/.481 with 10 RBI and three stolen bases.
The 24-year-old Wells logged 96 games this year with Low-A Tampa (five), Double-A Somerset (58) and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (33). He slashed .254/.349/.452 with five home runs and 20 RBI after his July 21 promotion.
Vazquez, 24, is 3-8 with a 4.59 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 17 starts at the Triple-A level this season. The Yankees originally called him up June 8, and this is his fourth time back in New York. He is 2-2 with a 2.42 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 22 1/3 IP at the MLB level.
Aug. 30, 1:25 p.m.
The Yankees announced they have released pitcher Spencer Howard, less than one month after acquiring the right-hander at the MLB trade deadline.
Howard came to the organization in a deal with the Texas Rangers for cash and was assigned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He made just three appearances with the Yankee minor league affiliate (spending some time on the injured list) and pitched to a 16.88 ERA allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and one walk in 2.2 innings pitched.
The 27-year-old made three appearances for the Rangers prior to the transaction, allowing four runs in 3.1 innings (10.80 ERA) and nine appearances for their Triple-A affiliate in Round Rock, allowing 11 runs in 18.1 innings (5.40 ERA).
Howard’s release frees up a spot on the club’s 40-man roster, which now stands at 38 after the release of veteran third baseman Josh Donaldson on Tuesday and could drop again if a team claims outfielder Harrison Bader off waives.
The move also allows for the Yankees to add a player to the MLB roster who is not on the 40-man roster and protect players from selection in the Rule 5 draft in December.
Aug. 18, 12:15 p.m.
The Yankees announced on Friday that they have recalled RHP Greg Weissert from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre ahead of a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox.
Weissert takes the place of RHP Randy Vasquez, who was optioned to Triple-A on Thursday. Vasquez pitched Wednesday against the Braves, allowing two earned runs on three hits and two walks over 3.1 innings in a 2-0 loss.
With the Yankees’ lack of starting pitching, the bullpen has been exhausted over the last week, so adding an extra arm should be beneficial, even with the day off on Thursday to give them extra rest.
Aug. 10, 3:00 p.m.
The Yankees announced on Thursday afternoon that they’ve optioned Nick Ramirez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The southpaw allowed a run in Wednesday’s loss to the White Sox, but he’s pitched relatively well this season. Across 26 big-league appearances he has a 2.67 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and 25 strikeouts.
The Yanks have not announced a corresponding roster move, but it is expected this will clear the way for Randy Vasquez to come back up and start Friday’s series opener against the Marlins.
The 24-year-old right-hander has a 1.17 ERA over his first three big-league starts this season.
Additionally, the recently DFA’d Deivi Garcia was picked up by the Whit Sox off waivers, officially bringing his time in New York to an end.

The Yankees announced that right-handed pitcher Deivi Garcia has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The Bombers had an open roster spot after optioning Randy Vasquez, who pitched five shutout innings in Wednesday’s loss to Baltimore, back to Triple-A.
Garcia, 24 was considered one of the Yankees’ top young arms as recently as 2021, when he was ranked as the organization’s No. 2 pitching prospect by MLB Pipeline.
But the young right-hander has slipped down the prospect rankings, having pitched in just nine big league games over the last four seasons.
In his only big league appearance this season, Garcia allowed one earned run over 3.0 innings of work against the Oakland A’s on May 10.
Luis Severino will start Thursday’s game for the Yankees, but calling up Garcia gives them some length in the bullpen, if needed.
Additionally, the Yankees have claimed Anthony Misiewicz off waivers from the Detroit Tigers and assigned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
In 124 appearances across four big-league seasons, the lefty has a 4.74 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and 111 strikeouts.

The Bombers opted not to call him up, allowing him to become a free agent.

June 1, 11:10 a.m.
Following Wednesday night’s 1-0 defeat to the Seattle Mariners, the Yankees optioned Oswaldo Cabrera, Franchy Cordero and left-hander Matt Krook to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

In 50 games this campaign, he’s slashed .195/.246/.292 for a .538 OPS and 49 OPS+. He has just nine extra-base hits and 15 RBI. Cabrera made his debut a season ago and in 44 games batted .247 with six homers and a .740 OPS and 108 OPS+, which is just above average.
The moves are likely a sign that Josh Donaldson, Giancarlo Stanton and Tommy Kahnle will be coming off the injured list for the Yanks’ weekend series at the Los Angeles Dodgers, but those moves were not yet announced.

Yankees everyday catcher Jose Trevino (hamstring) was activated from the IL on Tuesday. Ben Rortvedt was sent down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as the corresponding move. OF Franchy Cordero was called up when the team placed Harrison Bader (hamstring) on the IL prior to Tuesday’s game.
