Zeke to the Giants? Why Such a Pairing Might Make Sense

The Giants are said to be looking for a power running back to add to their growing committee. And this one-time division rival could very well make for a good fit.

The New York Giants signed running back Devin Singletary to help fill the void left by the departure of Saquon Barkley. After leading the Buffalo Bills in rushing four consecutive seasons, then leading the Houston Texans in rushing last season, Singletary has proven he can be the primary back for a team.

Still, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell believes the Giants should sign former Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott to pair with Singletary. The former New England Patriots back is still available after rushing for 670 yards this season.

Barnwell notes that although Elliott doesn’t have the explosiveness that once made him a transcendent back, he is still a productive back when running between the tackles, which warrants the Giants’ consideration.

Barnwell has a valid argument. Elliott’s power-back style would give the Giants their first complementary duo since Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw, whose crying styles used to wear opponents down. Although Elliott is on the downside of his career, to the point where he’s no longer a bell cow, as part of a committee, he would be kept fresh and deployed accordingly.

Elliott is also a good pass blocker whose presence would further benefit the Giants’ offense on passing downs. He might make a solid addition to the offense if he were willing to come in on a veteran minimum type of deal (probably unlikely).
