Zirkzee reports for duty at Carrington

Monday 29 July 2024 19:00

Manchester United’s first signing of the summer 2024 transfer window, Joshua Zirkzee, has reported to Carrington to begin his build-up to the new season.

The Netherlands international completed a move from Bologna FC earlier this month, signing a contract until June 2029.
However, the 23-year-old was not named in Erik ten Hag’s 29-man squad for Tour 2024, presented by Snapdragon, which is ongoing in the United States.

That was due to Zirkzee’s involvement in his country’s tilt at Euro 2024, where the Dutch reached the semi-finals before a 2-1 defeat to England.

But after completing his summer break, Zirkzee arrived at our training ground on Monday morning (29 July), in readiness to start his pre-season programme.

The forward will not be involved in our final two games of Tour 2024, against Real Betis (Thursday 1 August, 03:00 BST) and Liverpool (Sunday 4 August, 00:45 BST), but will build his fitness at Carrington in preparation for the wider squad’s return to Manchester next week.

After the Liverpool game in South Carolina, Ten Hag’s group will head home and start to prepare for the first competitive match of the season: the 2024 Community Shield at Wembley on Saturday 10 August, when we’ll face Manchester City.

That match could be a first opportunity for Zirkzee to make his United debut.

Earlier this month, Erik ten Hag told reporters in Norway why the club had moved decisively to secure Zirkzee’s signature.

“He is a player who can link up the game, who can be available, hold up the ball, have good ideas, be creative, can dribble, [make] combinations,” he explained.

“So that’s a different type and always what we are looking for, so it gives us more options tactically, which is good because, especially up front, we have many players who can play very direct and they can take a big benefit from his skills.”

Keep an eye out on the United app and ManUtd.com tomorrow (Tuesday 30 July), when we’ll bring you more photos and the first video of Zirkzee in training.
